Build a barge practical
In lesson one children plan, build and test model barges using Plasticine and a small water tank. The children work in small groups to design and test hull shapes through discussion, drawing and practical work and develop the most efficient shape to carry a cargo of marbles.
They compare their different designs using a fair test and think about common features in the most successful ones, before exploring the forces that are acting on the hull to make it float. Optional extension activities contain a range of maths word problems to help them practice their numeracy skills.
