Site information

This site is made up of two parts; a main site (which includes Whiffin Wharf, Hurlingham Wharf, Carnwath Road Industrial Estate and an area of the River Thames foreshore) and a small highways work site.

Carnwath Road Riverside

Following a pause as part of our response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have resumed some works at our Carnwath Road Riverside site. We have introduced several additional precautions so that our team can do this work safely to continue building the super sewer.

Rachel, one of the six Tunnel Boring Machine’s (TBM), began her journey in spring 2019, towards Acton. She will be resurfacing in summer 2020 at our Acton Pumping Station site.

The site team at Carnwath Road Riverside are working hard to keep Rachel moving towards Acton and removing the spoil from the muck bin. The muck is being transported to Rainham from our site by barge. One barge removes up to 50 lorries off the road.

Rachel has tunnelled over 3.5km, and is currently on her way to our Hammersmith Pumping Station site.

Charlotte, our TBM creating the Frogmore Connection Tunnel, is currently on her way from our Dormay Street site, which is located across the River Thames. Charlotte will be arriving at Carnwath Road Riverside in spring 2020.

You can track Rachel's progress here.

For more information, look at the latest CLWG presentation on the tab below.

We are working 24-hours a day as tunnelling has begun. This will be taking place predominantly underground.

All work to support the tunnelling activities takes place between 7am-10pm.

Our standard construction working hours are (with a 1-hour mobilisation period before and after these times):

  • Monday – Friday: 8am – 6pm

  • Saturday: 8am – 1pm

Additionally, we have maintenance periods on the weekend:

  • Saturday: 1 – 5pm

  • Sunday: 10am – 4pm

As a precautionary measure due to the current public health situation, our Community Liaison Working Group meetings are currently postponed.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this might cause, however please get in touch via our 24-hour Helpdesk on 08000 30 80 80 or email [email protected] if you would like to speak to a member of the team.
