Tideway wins Major Project of the Year
The Tideway project has won global recognition of its successful delivery last week by winning the top prize at the 2024 International Tunnelling Association Awards in Genoa.
The International Tunnelling Association has members from 80 countries and supports the industry by sharing best practice, highlighting new techniques and innovations and publishing guidelines.
The Thames Tideway Tunnel won Major Project of the Year (over 500 million Euros), with a new rail link between Long Island and Manhattan, New York in second place, a 43km rail line in Singapore in third and a road project in Shenzhen, China in fourth.
Andres Marulanda, ITA Vice-President and Chair of the ITA Awards Committee, said the final category at the ceremony, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, was 'the tunnelling equivalent of Best Film at the Oscars'.
Judges highlighted Tideway's vision for the wider benefits of the project and its innovations in building a safe and inclusive culture, as well as encouraging all Main Works Contractors to both innovate and collaborate to improve project delivery, including taking steps where possible to reduce the project's carbon footprint.
Tideway ran a joint submission with Jacobs on behalf of the whole project and after producing a written submission and film to highlight the project's achievements, Head of Corporate Responsibility John Sage and Senior Project Manager Brooke Knight gave a final presentation ahead of the ceremony at a conference centre in Genoa Harbour.
John said: "It was a privilege for Brooke and I to collect the award – fittingly a bronze sculpture of the great Isambard Kingdom Brunel – on behalf of all our colleagues in the project.
"To hear about so many amazing feats of engineering from around the world celebrated at the ITA Awards and then for our project to receive this recognition was humbling."
The Tideway project has also featured in a book called '50 Iconic Projects' published by the ITA to mark its 50th anniversary - one of three UK projects from the past 50 years that were chosen. The others are The Channel Tunnel and Crossrail / The Elizabeth Line.
